Lighter fabric doesn't really help...

Posted by Anastasia on Sunday, July 25, 2010
So I recently made costumes for a Harry Potter themed event, which I knew would be taking place in the heat of summer. Therefore, instead of going for screen-accurate, I modified everything so that it was fewer layers and made of lighter fabrics. Well, let me just say, it ended up hot enough at the event (when outside) that I could have been wearing a bikini and still been too hot, so it didn't really matter. Inside the air conditioners were cranking, so I would have been fine. So goal for ne...

I'm too nice...

Argh. Every time I don't commit to a contract, or don't demand full details up front, or agree to a sewing project out of the kindness of my heart, it goes badly. I should really have learned by now. I agreed to help someone with a project, and now that project is due any day and they have yet to get me the information or materials or return my calls, and I'm concerned that this is someone going to come back and be my fault.

The reminder to myself, and ALL costumers, is to always put things i...

COSTUMEGASM – Or “Why Louise Page Deserves Sainthood”

Posted by Anastasia on Thursday, March 4, 2010
So, this past weekend I attended Gallifrey One, a Doctor Who convention in Los Angeles. WHAT? I'm a geek. I know. And proud of it. ANYWAY...one of the attendees was Louise Page. Now, Louise has worked on Doctor Who as the designer for the last 4 years, but she was also the designer for "The Wedding Date" and a few eps of "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles". Throughout the weekend, I got several opportunities to listen to her talk shop, and even ask some questions. Let's go through it in orde...

Brand new website!

Posted by Anastasia on Wednesday, March 3, 2010
Hi there, internet! I decided it was about time I update my web presence. My old site was dysfunctional and hasn't been updated in years!

I'm currently on a quest to get back into the actual business of costuming. I love my freelance costume work, and my stash of costumes for myself, but really my goal has always been to work on stage, film, and tv. Let's see if I can get back on track.

Watch this space! :)

About Me

Anastasia I am a freelance costume designer and seamstress who specializes in historical costuming. I also dabble in fantasy costumes, and, well, anything that strikes my fancy or piques my curiosity. I have loved costumes ever since I was a little girl. I loved to play dress up whenever I could, and even made my own costumes out of everything from fabric scraps to construction paper. In high school I helped to take care of the drama department's large collection of over-used costumes. During this time I taught myself to hand-sew. Then came college...I took a Costume Construction class, a Costume History class, and worked on a wardrobe crew for the theater department. I did so well at these (not to mention how much I was enjoying myself) that I ended up working as an assistant in the University's costume shop for the next four years. I have now been doing my own freelance costume design and construction for about 10 years. For the last five years, my business has heavily revolved around the Renaissance Faire scene, though I am definitely still involved in other projects. I am willing to make custom costumes, but require you to be local (Southern California area) due to the fittings required. I do occasionaly add ready-to-wear costumes either on Ebay or my Etsy page. Please email me with questions.
